Argh...
As i mentioned previously... It's been bugging me.
Where to spend the next three years of my life? I'm stressing because i just want to stress, not that i need to... Anyways, The first hospital is a university hospital, carnegie level 1 research, millions of dollars put into research, duty is every 4 days... training would be probably exceptional... But it is in detroit. Detroit. I have nothing against detroit. It's just why have something in detroit, when you can have a piece of new york?
The one hospital that is near new york, is average hospital. It's a community hospital, but it is affiliated with Yale. I would get regular cases here, and duty is every six days. Benefits, salary way better than in detroit. ARRRRRGGGGHHHH.
The other, well let's not put that into consideration.
It's like choosing between UST versus, say Cardinal Santos (if Cardinal was located right smack at greenbelt)...
Better training or better living? Why did i come here again? i keep forgetting.
Okay focus cheen. You want to be a cardiologist.
I want to live, drink and eat new york too.
New york is the closest thing i could have of Manila.
Which brings up the point - why travel sixteen thousand miles just to go to some place like Manila? I could have rode the jeepney.
I wonder if tying this stethoscope around my neck real tight would help.

I"m a fellow Pinoy.MD'er. Difficult decision indeed. In the end, the question that you need answered are: What is more important to you? Living in a big city? or Getting the better training that would make me more competitive in a Cards Fellowship? It'd be simpler if the answer to both questions were the same... Just a reminder from someone who trained in NY - even though the pay in NY is better, after tax deductions, you might end up getting a bigger take home pay from Detroit. Another advice -- contact current and ex-residents from both programs, and see who's happier and fulfilled career-wise.
Hello doctor mia!
Thanks for the very great advice. Deep down, i know i should choose the one in detroit as it will really make me more competitive in terms of Cardio fellowship. I know you could relate to what i am feeling right now - that of me feeling like i have been studying all my life, i've been in a competitive field all my life and maybe perhaps i should kick back and relax... any chance of that happening in a doctor's life? Hahahaha. Stressful! Thanks mia! ARe you miadaj in pinoy.md? :) Great posts there!
Yes, I am miadaj. After ranking only 4 programs for residency, I did not get matched to my 1st choice, but my 3rd - which was an Ivy League program in NYC. I used my heart in ranking, but it all worked out to my advantage. It was a big and nationally known program, so I became in demand when the search for fellowship came. As I tell our resident applicants, rank the program you truly like and pray that your top program will also rank you highly. The NRMP will do its own magic and voila! Come 3rd week of March, the match results come out. It'll be almost 10 yrs since leaving Manila, 3.5 yrs since completing fellowship. Life's been good -- can't complain...Good luck!
